Amidst
the high Himalayan settlement of Tibetan-speaking people, at an altitude
of 8,800 feet
is
a serene village called Jomsom.
It is among the very few places in Nepal from where the Himalayan Peaks
can
be admired at such a close range. Giant peaks like Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri
and the Annapurna range seem almost
at
touching distance. Jomsom is not only the most popular trekking destination
in Nepal, but also the gateway to
Upper
Mustang "Kingdom" within the Hindu Kingdom of Nepal. It is also the gateway
to Muktinath temple
that
holds great religious significance to both Buddists and Hindus.
HOW
TO GET THERE
Jomsom
can be reached through trekking, small aircraft or helicopter as there
are no motorable roads leading to Jomsom.
About
8 daily flights connect Jomsom with Pokhara each flight taking about 20
minutes. Pokhara is in turn connected to Kathmandu by road and air which
is about 30 minutes by air and 5 hours by road.
Jomsom
and Muktinath (one of the holiest mountain
pilgrimage spots) lie in the upper areas of the Kali Gandaki valley,
which
provides one of the few clear passages through the virtually wall of the
Himalayas. The three mile deep
Kali
Gandaki Gorge (the deepest in the world) is flanked by Dhaulagiri and Annapurna
Range.
Jomsom
is famous for its very tasty apples. Usually, a short flight takes the
passengers from Kathmandu
to
Pokhara and then to Jomsom. The flights to Jomsom are held early in the
morning when there are no clouds
covering
the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Ranges of the Himalayas, leaving most
guests
thrilled even before they reach Jomsom.
