Just as each puzzle-piece is different, so it is with Indonesia's people, culture, landscape and holiday options.
Indonesia comprises 27 provinces and special territories. These are spread over the main islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya where 70% of the population is located, and the smaller islands of Nusa Tenggara, East Timor and Maluku, among others.
The islands of the Indonesian archipelago stretch almost 5000km (3100mi)
from the Asian mainland into the Pacific Ocean. Richly endowed with natural resources and hosting a phenomenal array of distinct cultures, they have been a magnet to Chinese and Indian traders, European colonisers, proselytising missionaries, wayward adventurers, mining companies, intrepid travellers and package tourists.
Java
Java is the political, geographic and
economic centre of the Indonesian archipelago.
It's a relatively small island, (approximately the same size as England) but has a population of 112 million, accounting for 55% of the country's total population. The island is certainly the most developed in the Indonesian archipelago, but despite its political and economic primacy it is still struggling with the twin demons of overpopulation and poverty.
The capital, Jakarta, has been unfairly saddled with a reputation as a
poverty-ridden, surly city but it actually has a lot to offer. It's the most expensive
city in Indonesia, the most polluted and the most congested, but if you can withstand this onslaught
and afford to indulge in its charms, then it is also one of the region's most exciting metropolises.
Jakarta boasts one of the best sights in all of South-East Asia: Sunda Kelapa,
the old Dutch port, is awash with magnificent Makassar schooners.
Java's other attractions include Bandung, the cool and comfortable
capital of West Java; Yogyakarta ('Yogya'), easily the most popular
city in Indonesia and a cultural and intellectual centre;
the glorious Borobudur
Buddhist temple complex; and the breathtaking
Hindu temple complex in Prambanan.

Lombok
Lombok is an island of uncrowded beaches and tranquil countryside, dominated by
the spectacular volcano of Mt Rinjani. The people are mostly Muslim (the Sasaks),
though there are isolated groups of Balinese Hindus. The Sasak culture is noteworthy
for weaving, its brilliant and dramatic dances, and its ritualised pageantry and contests.
Although officially four separate towns, Ampenan, Mataram, Cakranegara and
Sweta virtually merge to form a 'city' on Lombok. Mataram is the administrative capital;
Cakranegara the commercial centre; Sweta is the transport terminal and
site of the island's largest market; and Ampenan, once the central port, is the prime
location for budget accommodation and food.
Senggigi
located on a series of sweeping bays, has become the most developed tourist area on Lombok.
Despite a definite gearing to the upmarket traveller, there are still cheaper places to stay,
and the fine beaches and snorkelling make it worth the hunt. After you've soaked
up the last UVs and witnessed another magnificent sunset over the Lombok Strait,
you'll find this is the only spot in Lombok with any nightlife.
The coral-fringed Gili Islands have become enormously popular with visitors
who come for the very simple pleasures of sun, snorkelling and socialising.
Sumatra
Sumatra is an island with a wealth of natural resources and wildlife, massive rivers like muddy facsimiles of the Amazon, and some interesting architecture. It is almost four times the size of neighbouring Java, but supports less than a quarter of the population. During Dutch rule, it provided the world
MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Blessed with eternal summer, an incredibily rich range of flora and fauna and a diverse, multi-racial culture, Indonesia offers the visitor  the delights of a tropical holiday with all the comforts of home.
